Toilet Opera
A devised ensemble performance in public bathrooms
Public restrooms are one of the most surreal and most universal spaces that humans share. Toilet Opera is performed by a trio of artists, gathering with a small audience in a public toilet and asking: what are these places like, and what are we like in them? – among other questions arising, based on the artists’ explorations.
It's a small-scale, interactive, immersive performance that opens up these shared waystations to tell stories, create rituals, exorcise demons, ask hard questions and just plain play. (Bonus: If the show happens in a place with M+F toilets, the other restroom becomes gender-neutral during performance times.)
The second iteration featured Emily DeDakis (creator, performer), Jacob Anderson (juggler, acrobat), and Rachel Austin (composer, performer) and was performed at Accidental Theatre, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
